Instrument Rating (IR) Training
Our Instrument Rating training is an advanced, focused program designed to equip pilots with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to fly single-engine aircraft in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC). Here at Azzurra Aviation Academy, with our experienced instructors, the training becomes a personalized mentorship journey, blending technical rigor with real-world insight you need to earn your instrument rating.
- Ground School (30–40 hours):
Led by the instructor, this phase builds foundational knowledge in:
- Instrument meteorology
- Instrument flight rules (IFR)
- Airspace and procedures for IFR flight
- Navigation systems:
- VOR
- GPS
- ILS
- Instrument approach procedures
- Aviation physiology related to instrument flight
2. Flight Training:
-
Conducted in a certified training aircraft, equipped for instrument flight. Includes:
• 50 hours of cross-country PIC time, of which 10 hours must be in airplanes (if applying for airplane IR).
• 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time, including:
• 15 hours of instrument flight training from an authorized instructor.
• 3 hours of instrument training within 2 calendar months before the checkride.
• One cross-country IFR flight of at least 250 NM, with:
• Three different instrument approaches
• Use of three different kinds of navigation systems (GPS, VOR, ILS) - * FAA-approved simulator (BATD or AATD) can be used for up to 20 hours of instrument time
3. Checkride Preparation:
-
The instructor conducts mock oral exams and flight evaluations to prepare the student for the FAA Practical Test (checkride), which includes:
- Oral exam by Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) covering regulations, procedures, and systems
- Flight test demonstrating proficiency in IFR operations, approaches, and emergency procedures
